This article “Better living through Taxonomies” gives a really good clarification of taxonomies and controlled vocabularies. It explains the concepts very well and gives some examples also. I felt it was a nice refresher on what taxonomies are and why they are important.
And an example of a hierarchy (because visual examples are awesome):

I hear ‘taxonomies’ and I think Biology. And then my brain turns off. This is a good chart, though. Very helpful!
I will have to make sure I check it out. Chapter 5 in the book doesn’t do a bad job, and though I’ll never admit that I am sometimes confused about such things, I wouldn’t mind a more insightful look
